NO CONTEXT or Studio place or decentralize or We Actually Maybe Right Now Have Everything We Need
a work on a failed activity instigated by the 15 dance lab and the subsequent questions of what might be wrong with where we live that emerge from this failure and some gestures towards gentleness in this inquiry
Choreographed and performed by Amelia Ehrhardt, read by Catherine Ribeiro. Music by Mikki Blanco, Bikini Kill, Prince Nifty, Sophie, and Mariah Carey.
Performances: Nomadic Curatorial Collective, 2014, SummerWorks, 2016, Mile Zero Dance, 2017
This work was born out of a commission from the Nomadic Curatorial Collective (Cara Spooner, Victoria Mohr-Blakeney, and Erin McCurdy) to create a work out of the archival materials about 15 Dance Lab housed at Dance Collection Danse. 15 Dance Lab was the first home for experimental dance in Canada and was founded by Lawrence and Miriam Adams, also the founders of Dance Collection Danse. In working on this project I came across documents proposing a new center for dance built in a decommissioned TTC building which later became the Young People’s Theatre. No Context talked about this failed project and eventually also about Toronto, circumstances for dance, feminism, angst, and my personal life.
